Everson Elementary housing Whatcom Literacy class for adults
Even the parents at Everson Elementary School have the opportunity to learn. Through a partnership with the Whatcom Literacy Council, Everson Elementary offers an English class for parents hoping to improve their literacy or learn English for the first time.
Gloria Garcia, who grew up in Everson and leads the effort, is acutely aware that many local parents and their desire to improve their English. When Everson principal Kevin DeVere and Everson Elementary’s Sylvia Mendoza, who has remained proactive in reaching the community, offered classroom space for her to teach it wasn’t long before they found parents interested in signing up.
“It is a wonderful partnership, not only because the parents involved will become more proficient in English, which typically translates to being more employable and more able to navigate local services, but also because data shows that when adults are engaged in learning their children do better both socially and academically,” says Katherine Freimund, Whatcom Literacy executive director.
The literacy council offers a similar class for parents at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham and hopes to start another in Blaine, all part of the nonprofit’s effort to offer one-to-one tutoring and small group classes throughout Whatcom County.
