District growth gives holiday concerts a new twist

The holiday programs throughout the three Nooksack Valley elementary schools have taken on quite the expansion.

Jeanette Perry, music teacher, says the student growth within the schools has made it imperative to split the program into a multi-faceted event. At Everson Elementary, that means two events. The Sumas Elementary format matches Everson. At Nooksack, expect a three-pronged approach to the program.

At Everson and Sumas, the kindergarten through second-grade students have been working for more than a month on a program based on the book “The Mitten,” by Jan Brett. During the program, expect a reading of the book and songs sung for each character in the book.

The third and fifth-grade students at Everson and Sumas will center their program around the theme of peace, singing songs in both English and Spanish.

Perry says students have worked on the program since October. All classes, except kindergartners, meet once a week for 45 minutes so “students work very hard in order to be ready in only five rehearsal times,” Perry says.

Nooksack kindergarten through first-grade students will sing about snow and holidays, while second and third graders will showcase multi-cultural holiday songs and the theme of peace will play strong in the program from fourth and fifth graders.

“Students always enjoy signing for their families and are really excited when they see them in the audience,” Perry says.

The holiday program schedule (each school’s program will happen in their respective gymnasiums):
