Update on School Re-Opening

Dear Nooksack Valley Community and Staff;

Tonight, our school board approved the following plan for “re-opening” our schools for the 20-21 school year.

1. Start with remote learning at all levels.
2. Work with administrative team and local health department to get small groups of students back as soon as we can. We think this can happen sooner than later.
3. Work with the local health department on frequent intervals (3-4 weeks?) to review status and determine next opportunities to expand face to face learning.  Expansion would likely start at the early grades, and in a hybrid model.
4. Move the start date of school to Sept 8 (from Sept 2).  We can do this without adding days to the end, by moving some of the “non-student” days to the start.  This will allow for a little more time to provide some parent training, distribute Chromebooks, provide training for staff on the latest technology, and possibly meet with some parents and students before the year gets started.

Here is a list of some of the "why";

1. We have committed from the beginning of this pandemic that our two guiding principles are: a) follow the health department guidelines and b) get our students back in our classrooms as soon as possible.
2. Our Risk Pool Insurance has clearly told us to follow the local health department guidelines or risk loss of coverage.  This is a huge factor.
3. This will allow us to "go slow to go fast", bringing back students and staff in thoughtful and doable stages, while practicing our new health and safety protocols and procedures.  Starting fast and risking more shutdowns and quarantines would likely be more disruptive.
4. There are many other "operational" barriers to starting with more students.

First thing Monday morning, we will continue moving forward with these plans.  I am proud of our staff for the work they have done to date on developing a system of remote learning that will be much improved over what we launched in the spring.  They simultaneously developed plans for when we begin bringing students back into our classrooms.  Once we have the “go ahead”, we will be prepared to efficiently move to NV @ School. As parents, you can expect to soon have opportunities to learn more specifically about our plans to start the school year.

 

I have been in public education for many years.  Mine is a “personal” business as I’ve never been able to separate the personal from the professional. Compounding that, my own sixth grade and kindergarten grandsons really do need to get back to school. I so wish there was a playbook of some kind, and that we could look back at how we all handled the “last pandemic” in our schools.  That is not the case. I went into this business because I have a heart for children and to serve my community.   I also pride myself in working together to find solutions to complex problems. Unfortunately, there are no “right” answers here.  There are only best choices based on the current information we have. If we could find a better path forward, I would have recommended it.

 

I am fully aware, through ongoing conversations, surveys, and a good number of “intense” emails, that some of you will be disappointed with this decision.  My hope, prayer, and request is that we now all transition to doing what our community always does.  Let’s together focus on making this work as well as we possibly can.  Let’s keep our eye on “NVPRIDE”, and on the longstanding reputation Nooksack Valley has earned, as a community that positively pulls together in challenging times.

Estimado personal y comunidad de Nooksack Valley;

Esta noche, nuestra junta escolar aprobó el siguiente plan para "reabrir" nuestras escuelas para el año escolar 20-21.

1. Comience con el aprendizaje remoto en todos los niveles.

2. Trabajar con el equipo administrativo y el departamento de salud local para recuperar grupos pequeños de estudiantes tan pronto como podamos. Creemos que esto puede suceder más temprano que tarde.

3. Trabaje con el departamento de salud local en intervalos frecuentes (¿de 3 a 4 semanas?) Para revisar el estado y determinar las próximas oportunidades para expandir el aprendizaje cara a cara. La expansión probablemente comenzaría en los primeros grados y en un modelo híbrido.

4. Mueva la fecha de inicio de clases al 8 de septiembre (del 2 de septiembre). Podemos hacer esto sin agregar días al final, moviendo algunos de los días "no estudiantiles" al comienzo. Esto permitirá un poco más de tiempo para brindar capacitación a los padres, distribuir Chromebooks, brindar capacitación al personal sobre la última tecnología y posiblemente reunirse con algunos padres y estudiantes antes de que comience el año.

Aquí hay una lista de algunos de los "por qué";

3. Esto nos permitirá "ir despacio para ir rápido", trayendo de regreso a los estudiantes y al personal en etapas reflexivas y factibles, mientras practicamos nuestros nuevos protocolos y procedimientos de salud y seguridad. Comenzar rápido y arriesgarse a más cierres y cuarentenas probablemente sería más perturbador.

4. Existen muchas otras barreras "operativas" para comenzar con más estudiantes.

A primera hora del lunes por la mañana, seguiremos avanzando con estos planes. Estoy orgulloso de nuestro personal por el trabajo que han realizado hasta la fecha en el desarrollo de un sistema de aprendizaje remoto que mejorará mucho con respecto a lo que lanzamos en la primavera. Simultáneamente, desarrollaron planes para cuando comenzamos a traer estudiantes de regreso a nuestras aulas. Una vez que tengamos el "visto bueno", estaremos preparados para mudarnos eficientemente a NV @ School. Como padres, pronto tendrán la oportunidad de aprender más específicamente sobre nuestros planes para comenzar el año escolar.

He estado en educación pública durante muchos años. El mío es un negocio "personal", ya que nunca he podido separar lo personal de lo profesional. Para agravar eso, mis propios nietos de sexto grado y jardín de infancia realmente necesitan regresar a la escuela. Me gustaría mucho que hubiera un libro de jugadas de algún tipo, y que pudiéramos recordar cómo todos manejamos la “última pandemia” en nuestras escuelas. Ese no es el caso. Entré en este negocio porque tengo un corazón para los niños y para servir a mi comunidad. También me enorgullezco de trabajar juntos para encontrar soluciones a problemas complejos. Desafortunadamente, aquí no hay respuestas "correctas". Solo existen las mejores opciones basadas en la información actual que tenemos. Si pudiéramos encontrar un mejor camino a seguir, lo habría recomendado.

Soy plenamente consciente, a través de conversaciones en curso, encuestas y un buen número de correos electrónicos “intensos”, que algunos de ustedes se sentirán decepcionados con esta decisión. Mi esperanza, oración y solicitud es que ahora todos hagamos la transición para hacer lo que nuestra comunidad siempre hace. Centrémonos juntos en hacer que esto funcione lo mejor posible. Estemos atentos a "NVPRIDE" y a la reputación de larga data que Nooksack Valley se ha ganado, como una comunidad que se une positivamente en tiempos desafiantes.
