Hello Nooksack Valley;

Survey data: Thank you to those who completed the survey.  We know there was quite an interest in what the results were. Here is a summary:

1.   We had 540 responses.  We have about 1900 students.  65% of the responses were from parents with elementary students.

2.   Almost 80% of parents were either “comfortable with minimal or no concerns” or “comfortable with concerns”.  About 20% of respondents were either “somewhat comfortable” or “not at all comfortable having their student return to school”.

Meanwhile, here are a few things we have been working on:

1.   Determining how many students we can have in our schools and classrooms while attending to the Department of Health requirements.  Factors like the physical size of the classroom, furniture layout, and number of students in a class will help in deciding how many students can be in a school or classroom at the same time.

2.   School “operations” (facilities, food service, transportation, technology, etc.), to ensure that these various operations of our school district are ready to go.  This includes meeting all of the requirements for the health and safety of students and staff.

3.   Face coverings continue to be a state health department requirement.  However, it is our understanding that there could be further guidance coming out.  One concept being talked considered at the health department is how to give face covering “breaks” throughout the day (i.e. at recess, other times).

4.   Also, please remember that our school district must adhere to our Insurance Pool and Labor and Industries requirements for us to follow the state re-opening guidelines.  We also must follow those guidelines in order for our back to school plans to get approval to move forward.

5.   In a response to the state guidance for reopening schools and our family survey results, the district is working to offer face to face learning and distance learning options for families who choose not to return to in-person learning at school.  The three options we are working to offer include, NV at School, NV at Home, and NV Online.

NV at School

Face to face learning at school following the required DOH health and safety guidelines for social distancing requirements.  The number of school days each week will depend on the number of families and students who chose to return to in-person learning at school and space required for distancing.  NVSD is currently looking at every possible option to maximize the number of days all students will attend.

 

NV at Home

Families apprehensive about their child attending school for any reason can opt for their child to attend school virtually. 

·NV Teachers will provide instruction through online live and recorded lessons from the classroom as well as individual student and group check ins through TEAMs online platform and/or other communication methods 

·All work to accompany lessons will be provided and distributed to families

·Students will be expected to follow their schedule, log in for attendance daily, and complete assignments daily. 

·Chromebooks and hotspots will be available for those in need. K-8 students would need families to support at home for this option.

 

NV Online

This option is for families who wish to have an online program with more flexibility in their schedule.  Students will enroll in appropriate classes for their grade level (up to 6 classes for 9-12) on an online independent learning platform.  The online teachers will be provided through the platform and have experience with online learning. 

·Students will still be s considered NVSD students, and classes will be transcribed directly to students’ NV HS transcripts or for K-8 cumulative file.

· A NVSD staff member would be assigned to monitor progress and attendance for this program.  

·Chromebooks and hotspots will be available for those in need. K-5 students would need families to support at home for this option.

To continue planning around these possible options and answer the many questions we know you still have, we need to have a good understanding of how many families plan to attend face to face learning at school in the fall and how many families would be interested in NV at Home or NV Online options.  Expect a survey about the specific options above sometime in the next week.  In the meantime, if you have more questions please do not hesitate to call your building principal.

Datos de la encuesta: Gracias a quienes completaron la encuesta. Sabemos que había bastante interés en cuáles fueron los resultados. Aquí hay un resumen:

Mientras tanto, aquí hay algunas cosas en las que hemos estado trabajando:
