NV Schools to Resume Nov. 29, Sumas Students Moving to Other Buildings

Nooksack Valley Schools will resume in-classroom learning on Monday, Nov. 29, and students from Sumas Elementary will attend school at a different district building. 

Based on survey results representing 1,200 of the district's 1,700 students, the needs within the community are still at an emergency level given the number of families and staff displaced from their homes. 

NV Schools staff is working through the survey results and the expressed needs within the survey and will continue to plan for the reopening of schools on Nov. 29, all while locating and communicating with families. 

The flood damage at the current Sumas Elementary School is extensive and will not allow the district to safely host students at that building. To ensure Sumas students have a place to learn, Sumas students will attend school at a different Nooksack Valley Schools building.

Sumas staff will communicate with individual families the week of Nov. 22 on the new location of their classroom. 

What are the changes for transportation? 

Staff is working on a plan for transportation for Sumas Elementary students and other families who have been displaced from their home. We expect to have more information next week. 

If I've been displaced from my home, does my child still attend school at NV? 

Yes, your child will still attend school at NV, returning on Nov. 29. 

How long should Sumas students expect to attend school at a different building? 

The current Sumas Elementary building will not be safely usable this school year, but we hope the new construction will be ready for students before the end of the current school year. 

Did the flooding impact the new Sumas Elementary construction? 

No, there was no damage to the new construction.
